WIN PROJECT
Origins

From STREEHITAKARINI to WIN

Streehitakarini (SHK), an Indian NGO whose name means "Institution for the well-being of women", was founded in 1964 in Mumbai, and has acquired an extensive and solid experience regarding poverty reduction in slum settings. Through its pragmatic approach and by listening carefully to people's needs, SHK has achieved an ever growing and sustainable success. Between the end of the nineties and her death in 2004, Mrs Indumati Parikh, medical doctor and founder of SHK, worked in close collaboration with a sister organisation of SHK, called Centre for the Study of Social Change (CSSC).

The objective of CSSC consists in replicating and further developing the activities initiated by SHK. This project was named WIN: Women of India Network.

The document "Streehitakarini, the Origins of the WIN Project" (pdf 450Kb) provides you with a complete overview of the various programmes SHK implemented for the benefit of women and children.
