Originally from Eritrea, Jemal came to Switzerland in 2011. He lives in Yverdon, is married, and has 4 children.
When he arrived in Switzerland, he applied for asylum, and was granted refugee status with an F permit. He then took French classes, trained in mechanics, and worked in a cleaning business.
Jemal joined the Alter Start program in 2017. He was interested in trade but didn’t know with what type of products he could work. Alter Start helped him to design his project in accordance with his skills and abilities.
«I have over 30 years of experience in tailoring: I started at the age of 18 and have always practiced since. I can sew anything.»
Jemal has launched a custom-made tailoring project. He recently found premises in which he set up his boutique Asmara Retail, where he works as a tailor. He makes clothes, curtains, tablecloths, and other customized items. His wife also joined the project: she runs a grocery store with African goods at the same place.
